Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

Cigna-HealthSpring Medicare plans are accepted by a wide range of doctors, pharmacists and other types of health care providers all over the U.S. There are a few primary types of Medicare Advantage plans, such as an HMO or a PPO, and each type of plan has different network rules.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

A Medicare HMO plan gives you access to a Medicare-approved network of doctors and hospitals. In many cases with an HMO plan, your costs may not be covered when you receive care from a provider outside of your plan network, and you may need a referral from your primary care physician before seeing a specialist.

Cigna-HealthSpring offers a number of Medicare HMO plans. Some of these plans include, but are not limited to:

  • Cigna-HealthSpring Advantage (HMO)
  • Cigna-HealthSpring Preferred (HMO)
  • Cigna-HealthSpring PreventiveCare (HMO)
  • Cigna-HealthSpring Primary (HMO)

Not all plans are available in all areas. Plan availability depends on where you live.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

A Medicare PPO plan typically allows you to visit doctors both in and outside of the plan network. Any medical care you receive from doctors or hospitals outside of your plan network will typically come with higher out-of-pocket costs, such as a copay or coinsurance.

Cigna-HealthSpring offers a number of Medicare PPO plans. Some of these plans include, but are not limited to:

  • Cigna-HealthSpring Advantage (PPO)
  • Cigna-HealthSpring Preferred (PPO)

Not all plans are available in all areas. Plan availability depends on where you live.

Review Your Medicare Plan Before Open Enrollment

Medicare plans can change from one year to the next. Some of these plan changes can include out-of-pocket costs, network coverage and the doctors and hospitals who will accept the plan’s terms and conditions.

Each year, prior to the Fall Medicare Open Enrollment Period, contact your Medicare Advantage plan provider to inquire about any changes to your plan for the upcoming year.

If you discover that your doctor will be leaving your plan’s network and you wish to remain with that doctor, you can use the Open Enrollment Period to shop for a plan that will include your doctor in the plan network.
