What Are the Medicare Star Ratings?

The Medicare Star Ratings rate the quality and performance of Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare stand-alone prescription drug plans.³ Please note that the Medicare Star Ratings don’t rate Medicare Supplement Insurance plans.

According to Medicare.gov, the ratings range from one star (poor) up to five stars (excellent).

The federal Medicare program is in charge of rating each Medicare Advantage plan and Medicare prescription drug plan every year. The annual ratings help summarize the plan’s overall performance.

Depending on the plan’s coverage, the overall rating assesses a large variety of categories which may include the plan’s history of customer service, managing chronic conditions, member experiences and customer complaints, to name a few.

How Do I Find a Highly Rated Plan?^*

The star ratings can help you find a plan rated highly by Medicare and help narrow down your plan options.

*Highly rated is considered 4 and above out of 5 stars. Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-Star rating system. Star Ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next.

When you search for Medicare plans online, you should be able to view the Medicare Star Ratings score. This score will range from one star up to five stars.³

If you find several plans that fit your coverage needs and budget but only one plan has five stars, then you may be more interested in enrolling in that plan.
