Trileptal is a medication used to treat seizures. Trileptal is available as a brand name or as a generic and comes as an oral tablet or an oral liquid.

Trileptal is a medication that contains the active ingredient Oxcarbazepine. It is used to treat focal, or partial, onset seizures associated with epilepsy.

Trileptal works in the brain to stabilize nerves and decrease excitation to help prevent seizures. It is typically taken twice daily.

Common side effects include headache, drowsiness, upset stomach, loss of appetite, belly pain, dizziness, shakiness, nervousness, insomnia, changes in taste, diarrhea, constipation and signs of a common cold.

Trileptal can sometimes increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or action in people who take it. You may experience depression, restlessness, panic attacks or other negative mood changes. Talk to your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

Let your doctor know if you experience any skin problems such as red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin, as Trileptal can lead to a serious skin condition called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

Also talk to your doctor if you experience swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, tongue or throat. This can indicate a serious swelling condition caused by Trileptal.
