Medicare Premium

The cost of health care may be expensive for Medicare beneficiaries, especially those who require coverage for vision, dental and prescription drugs. Many Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for these types of services in addition to your Part A and Part B benefits.

Monthly premiums

The average Medicare Advantage premium (for a plan with prescription drug coverage) will be $40 per month in 2019,** and the standard monthly Medicare Part B premium in 2019 is $135.50.***

Most people do not pay a monthly premium for their Medicare Part A benefits, if they paid enough Medicare taxes while working.

How much you pay for your monthly premium depends on the Medicare Advantage plan you enroll in.

  • You will pay your Medicare Advantage premium in addition to your Medicare Part B premium.
  • Some Medicare Advantage have $0 monthly premiums.*
  • Some insurers offer a credit towards your Medicare Part B premium.

Other costs to consider

Like Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage leaves some out-of-pocket costs to you. These usually include:

  • Deductibles: The amount you must pay before your insurance policy will pay their share of a claim

  • Coinsurance: The percentage you must pay for a covered health care service

  • Copayment: The fixed amount you must pay for a covered health care service
