Medicare Part B does cover hearing tests and balance exams if ordered by your doctor or other health care provider to see if you need specific medical treatment.
Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B) does not provide coverage for routine hearing exams or hearing aids, however. Medicare beneficiaries who want routine hearing coverage can consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare Part C) that offers hearing benefits.
If your doctor accepts Medicare assignment and orders a hearing and balance test, your Medicare Part B medical insurance benefits will help cover the cost of your exam.
After you meet your Part B deductible (which is $185 per year in 2019), you are responsible for 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for the exam.
Be sure to ask your health care provider why they are recommending your hearing test and whether Medicare will cover it. Medicare Part B does not cover exams that are meant for fitting your hearing aids.
Although Original Medicare doesn’t cover much in the way of routine hearing care, beneficiaries aren’t entirely out of luck. Many Medicare Advantage plans can provide hearing coverage that includes routine hearing tests, hearing aids, hearing aid fittings and maintenance and other services.
Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative option for many beneficiaries enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.
By law, Medicare Advantage plans must provide the same basic coverage as Part A and Part B (with one notable exception being hospice benefits, which you still receive through Part A hospital insurance).
Many Medicare Advantage plans may also offer additional benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. Other popular benefits commonly found in Medicare Advantage plans can include prescription drug coverage (which could include drugs used for treating ear infections), vision, dental and memberships to gyms and wellness programs like SilverSneakers.
Medicare Advantage plans are sold by private insurance companies, so any hearing benefits that may be offered can vary from one plan to the next. Plan selection can also vary from one location to the next.
